About Dr Siveregi

Dr Siveregi has spent twenty years in medicine, with specialist training through UCT and Groote Schuur, and pregnancy is his everyday work. Straightforward ones, and the ones that need watching more closely. He explains what he is seeing on the scan as he goes, so you leave each visit knowing what is happening and what comes next.

You see the same doctor the whole way through, from the first visit to the birth. Nobody new reading your file back to you at thirty weeks, and no starting your story over. By the time your baby arrives, the person delivering is the person who has known about your pregnancy from the beginning.

If something does not feel right to you, say it. Being worried about your baby and being told it is probably nothing is a horrible way to spend a week. Whether this is your first pregnancy or you have had a hard one before, the things that are frightening you are worth bringing in.

Questions women ask before their first visit

How far along should I be before I come in?

Come in as soon as you know. The first visit confirms the pregnancy, dates it with a scan, and sorts out the blood tests, and it also means anything that needs watching is picked up early rather than at twenty weeks. If you have already been seen elsewhere, bring whatever results you have with you.

Will Dr Siveregi be the one who delivers my baby?

That is the intention, and it is the reason he sees you himself at every visit rather than passing you between doctors. Babies do arrive at their own hour, so on the rare occasion he genuinely cannot be there, the doctor covering has your full file and knows your pregnancy. You will not be handed to a stranger who is reading about you for the first time.

Can I move to Dr Siveregi if I am already a few months along?

Yes. Women transfer across from other practices and from clinic care all the way through, and there is nothing awkward about it. Bring your card and any scan reports you have and he will pick up from where you are. If you are unhappy with where you are being seen, being far along is not a reason to stay.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can book directly with Dr Siveregi. Some medical aid plans pay better on a referral, so it is worth a quick check with your scheme, but you do not need one to be seen.

Do you take medical aid?

Yes. The practice is contracted with almost all schemes and bills them directly, so you are not left claiming it back yourself. Pregnancy is covered differently from plan to plan, and most schemes have a set number of antenatal visits and scans on your maternity benefit. Reception will go through what your plan covers and what you would pay in when you book, so you know before you start rather than at the end.

Do I have to drive to Cape Town for my scans?

No. Scanning is done in the consulting room during your appointment, so you see your baby at the same visit and there is no second booking somewhere else. Over a whole pregnancy that saves a lot of driving.

Can my partner come in with me?

Yes. Your partner, your mother or a friend is welcome in the consultation, including for scans, and children are fine too if you have nobody to leave them with.

What do I do if something worries me between visits?

Phone the rooms during the day and say what is happening. You will not be made to feel silly for calling, and it is always better to be checked than to sit at home wondering. If it is after hours, or if you are bleeding, in pain, or your baby is moving less than usual, go straight to the hospital rather than waiting for the rooms to open.

Still not sure? Ask when you request an appointment and reception will talk it through with you.
